ABOUT THE STARS, ABOUT THE RAIN is a short story about a family on a camping trip trying to save their marriage. It would be considered "mainstream" with fantastical elements. Can a storm, a lost children's toy, and stories from the past help bring this family back together?
David Bain is the author of GRAY LAKE A NOVEL and several short story collections. He has an MFA from Columbia College Chicago and teaches writing at a community college in Indiana.

Great idea: family camping on the beach. Bad idea: said camping trip in a hellacious rain storm.I've been camping in a tent in horrific rain storms. I know that can ruin a good camping trip. (Fortunately not in my experience: we never had a tent leak or collapse.) I also know that you can't see stars during a terrible storm (as in this story). However, seeing a sky absolutely filled with stars - way outside of the light pollution of the city - is another one of the joys of camping.
This story begins with a family camping trip on a beach. Clearly there is tension between the parents. Then you add a storm that threatens to gobble up a favorite toy and collapse the tent while the family cowers inside. But somewhere on the beach a mystical figure appears in the rain. She dances with Dad, and reminds him of another time.
Sure, a terrible storm can ruin a camping trip. But can that same storm - the one strong enough to send everyone running through the deluge, soaked and shivering, seeking refuge from a collapsed tent - can that same storm be just what is needed to begin healing what has been broken in this family for so long? When you can't wish on a star, maybe - just maybe - there might be a good alternative in the rain.
While this is not one of my favorite Bain stories, I agree with many of the other reviewers: you just can't go wrong with anything written by David Bain. (At least I haven't found anything yet!)

About the Stars About the Rain David Bain 9781475230444 Books Reviews
I really enjoyed this story. The start was iffy, but the middle and the end were, in a way, kind of magical. I always like Mr. Bains stories. He's very good at what he does! Yep, I'd recommend this story and author.
This was a nice little read. Without spoiling too much, it's about a family that's gone camping during a storm. I love the way things are described in this story. It's short enough I don't want to spoil any story by saying anything else. I'd say just read it, it's good.
A sweet thoughtful and haunting fantasy with echoes of Bradbury, Stephen King and Edward Albee. Looking out the window after reading this book I can still taste the rain and hear it splashing down.
yours in storytelling,
Steve Vernon
"About the Stars, About the Rain" was one of the stories by David Bain I hesitated to buy and waited a bit. The description on didn't interest me, but I realized I couldn't go wrong with a story by Mr. Bain, so I made the purchase.
A married couple on the edge of the Big D decide a camping trip is just what the family needs. A powerful storm, a toy van , and recollections of the past turns a much needed vacation into an an imaginative adventure.
While not up to par with "Weed A Green River Crime Novella" , "A Pleasure to Burn" and other of Bain's popular works; it holds it's own. I have read it twice and each time my opinion on what really happened changes. I won't delve into that because it would require spoiling the story.
Have a read for yourself and come to your own conclusion but either way you are sure to enjoy it.
